Will You Be Confused by Tile Grout and Tile Mortar?

Tile grout and tile mortar are not the same; they serve different purposes in the installation of tiles. Here's the distinction between the two:

1. **Tile Grout:**

- **Purpose:** Tile grout is used to fill the gaps or joints between tiles after they are installed. Its primary function is to provide stability to the tiles, prevent moisture from seeping beneath them, and give the tiled surface a finished appearance.

- **Composition:** Grout is typically a mixture of cement, sand, and water. It comes in various colors to match the tiles or create a contrasting effect.

- **Application:** Grout is applied to the spaces between tiles using a rubber float or grout bag. It is pushed into the joints, excess grout is wiped away, and then it is left to cure.

- **Function:** Grout serves as a filler and helps keep tiles in place, maintaining the structural integrity of the tile installation.

2. **Tile Mortar (Thinset):**

- **Purpose:** Tile mortar, also known as thinset mortar, is used to bond tiles to the substrate (such as a wall or floor). It provides a strong and durable adhesive layer between the tile and the surface it's being installed on.

- **Composition:** Thinset mortar is a mixture of cement, fine sand, and sometimes additional additives to enhance adhesion. It is available in both modified and unmodified forms.

- **Application:** Mortar is spread onto the surface using a notched trowel, and then tiles are pressed into the mortar. The tiles adhere to the mortar as it cures.

- **Function:** Tile mortar creates a secure bond between the tiles and the substrate, ensuring they stay in place and do not shift over time.

So, tile grout is used to fill gaps between tiles, while tile mortar (thinset) is used to adhere the tiles to the surface. They have distinct functions and compositions, both crucial for a successful tile installation.

Summary:

Tile grout and tile mortar are not the same; they serve different purposes in the installation of tiles.
